Thanksgiving - A sacred holiday no more

20 years ago the only stores open on Thanksgiving were the occasional gas station and hotel for travelers. And most of the gas stations were operating on a condensed schedule. In 2005, if I so chose, I could have went to Waffle House for breakfast, did some pre-holiday shopping at Wal-mart and K-mart, swung by Starbucks for a cup of joe, and then ate supper at the steak house. Not very traditional I say, but it was do-able.

In today's American society convenience and the all mighty dollar seem to be more important than tradition. Sad I say. Why can't these businesses shut down for 24 hrs and give their employees a break? It's Thanksgiving! A time for families and friends to gather, share a meal, and be thankful for the things we have in our lives.

Come on retailers, think about it, there will be a gazillion people out on "Black Friday" ready to hit the stores at 5am for bargains, munch on some pancakes, plop down a benjamin for a latte, and quite possible forgo leftovers for a slice of beef.

  • Me and Kevin were just talking about this. We bet that Chik-Fil-E will probably one day start opening on Sundays due to the almighty dollar. They will break, oh yes, they will break.
